Where Found

India is probably the oldest known source of diamonds but South Africa became the major supplier of this april birthstone by the late 19th Century. Historic sources of diamond have also been in Brazil. There have been important diamond finds in California, Colorado, Russia, Australia and Canada. Diamonds can be found throughout the world, but abundant mines are located in South Africa, Australia, India, Russia, and Brazil.

History, mythology

Diamonds have been the pride of empires throughout time, and several are legendary, such as the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian Institution and Kohinoor Diamond of the Moghuls of India, now a part of the Crown Jewels Collection. Ancient Hindu followers believed diamonds were created by thunderbolts striking the ground. Diamonds have been called the "gems of the sun" in reference to their brilliance. When worn, the stones supposedly brought the bearer strength and courage. In America, diamonds are traditionally used in engagement and wedding rings. This tradition may have started from the superstition that a given diamond transfers good luck and true love to the recipient.
